Curly hair ponytail?

I am a guy, and need help growing a ponytail. Problem is, I have curly hair (like a sine curve-google it-kinda hard toe explain) which is thick, thick, and a little bit thicker than a second ago. It's about 3-4 inches. I had a cut a month ago, but I've been growing it for about 5 months. Any tips on how to grow it and if i can even get it that long without it looking like a big ball of hair in a year. Thanks!
